Ben Gavel

Ben is our new high school technology teacher. Ben has been teaching everything from lifeguarding to university since he was 16. He has nearly 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher, including nine in Japan, where he only ever experienced one snow day – because of two millimeters of snow! Prior to Churchill, Ben taught at an international school in Singapore, a school with over 3,500 students (only 45 times the size of Churchill), representing 60 nationalities. Ben’s teaching philosophy centers around creating relevant and interesting opportunities for learning, setting clear expectations, and supporting students with strategies to become lifelong independent learners. In his spare time Ben enjoys hockey and anything outdoors. Ben even coached and played hockey in Japan and Singapore!

Brendan Mulcahy

Brendan has been teaching for 12 years, including nine years teaching in the Northwest Territories. During that time Brendan taught junior and senior high and was Principal for six years.  Brendan also worked in the Strait Regional School Board while completing his Master of Education degree, and was the First Nations student success coordinator at East Antigonish Education Centre. Brendan believes strongly in building relationships with students, and takes a great deal of satisfaction from seeing students succeed and overcome challenges in Math as well as in their life outside the classroom.  Brendan has a 12-year-old daughter and in his spare time enjoys biking, kayaking, and running. Brendan even coaches and referees basketball. With Brendan’s help we may finally be able to revive our teacher vs student basketball game!
